National education decides to add 1h30 of mathematics in 1st general at the start of the 2022 school year

It’s decided, national education is getting started “in working order” so that mathematics returns through the back door to high school. At the start of the 2022 school year, an additional 1 hour 30 minutes per week will be added to the common core of pupils in 1D general who do not follow the mathematics speciality. The measure, which should represent 450 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions, will be financed by overtime and surplus positions already planned for the mathematics capes, we know Rue de Grenelle.

National education has therefore chosen to follow the main recommendation of the committee of experts, mandated by Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer to find a solution to the question of mathematics. Become a specialty of your choice from the 1D – and followed, in practice, by a majority of boys (58%) and many pupils from privileged social origins (46%) – the discipline was in decline, with 18% less teaching hours since then. the high school reform that came into force at the start of the 2019 school year. This arbitration, which comes after the start of the ministerial reserve period preceding the presidential election, should be clarified after the expert report has been submitted to the minister on Monday March 21.

“For the moment, we can only follow the recommendations for the start of the 2022 school year, that is to say make sure to add 1h30 of maths in 1D for non-specialists »we cautiously let Rue de Grenelle know, taking care not to anticipate the vision of the future Minister of Education, who “could make other choices for mathematics in the future”.

Increase the share of girls

The Directorate General for School Education (Dgesco) and the Higher Council for Programs (CSP) will be contacted quickly to allow – in record time by the start of the school year in September – to release the hours and prepare the mathematical content of this future discipline. Renamed “scientific education and mathematics”, it will be increased to 3:30 in 1D, against 2 hours today where SVT, physics and mathematics were mixed. The objective is to ensure that non-specialists can switch to the final year option “complementary mathematics”, chosen for the moment by students who abandon the specialty at the end of 1D.

The expert committee, which brings together the pilots of the high school reform but also general inspectors of mathematics, also asked that quantified objectives be recorded to increase the share of girls in the “expert maths” option, an additional the specialty in terminale, whose students are mainly oriented towards studies in hard sciences. “Four more high school girls per establishment would be enough to provide expert mathematics for a contingent of 10,000 girls, i.e. 40% of the total workforce”thus indicates Pierre Mathiot, the architect of the reform of the school which piloted the committee. “It’s a small, simple objective, easy to pass on to principals”, and which should in principle be retained, he says.
