Jean-Luc Mélenchon rejects the term “useful vote” but considers himself the candidate best placed on the left to counter the far right
Jean-Luc Mélenchon challenged Thursday the formula of “useful vote”, which his rivals on the left accuse him of cultivating to climb to the second round of the presidential election. Rather than talking about voting ” useful “in the entourage of the candidate we prefer the terms “effective voting”.
“We try to convince that we have a good program, but we will not say that we are the useful vote, because that would imply that the rest are useless votes”said the candidate of La France insoumise (LFI), questioned on leaving a meeting with the secretary general of the CFDT, Laurent Berger.
The candidate running for the presidential election for the third consecutive time wished that ” all [les Français] go vote” during the presidential election on April 10 and 24, regardless ” for who “.
“At this stage, if it is a question of preventing the far right from being present in the second round, it is not very clear who we could vote for other than me”, he added, however. Credited with about 13% of the votes in the first round according to recent polls, Mr. Mélenchon stands out clearly from his main competitors on the left in the voting projections.
Mme Hidalgo strongly criticized on Tuesday the idea of a “useful vote” in favor of the candidate of LFI, qualifying the radical left of which he is the herald of “least useful left in the world”, unable to assume power. With Mr. Jadot, both very critical of the diplomatic line of the LFI candidate on Russia, they refused at this stage to say for whom they would vote in the event of a second round between the outgoing president, Mr. Macron, and Mr. Mélenchon.
During this declaration, Jean-Luc Mélenchon had just met separately with the management of four central trade unions (FO, Solidaires, CFDT, CGT). He must meet soon with the CFE-CGC and has already exchanged with the FSU. “There is a clear feeling that there are heavy social issues in this election”estimated the candidate, while emphasizing that it was a question of having a dialogue with the unions, which by tradition do not give voting instructions.
