The ultra-popular rock group Foo Fighters announced, Friday evening, March 25, the death of its longtime drummer, Taylor Hawkins, at the age of 50. No details about the circumstances of his death are revealed in the group’s Twitter message, posted against a black background.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely death of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” is it written. “His musical spirit and contagious laughter will live with us all forever”is added.

“Our thoughts are with his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect at this incredibly difficult time.”, concludes the message. Taylor Hawkins is survived by his wife Alison and their three children.

The band was barely touring South America. After playing in Mexico, Chile and Argentina, he was to perform this Friday in Colombia, and Sunday in Brazil.

Very prominent in the group

After Foo Fighters founder and frontman Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins was the band’s most prominent member, appearing alongside the singer and guitarist in interviews and playing prominent roles in the band’s videos.

He also starred in the group’s recently released horror comedy film, Studio 666, in which a demonic force in a house where the group is staying seizes Dave Grohl and turns him murderous. Taylor Hawkins and other members of the group – Pat Smear, Rami Jaffee, Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel – are killed one by one. The idea for the film was born from their work on their tenth studio album in a house in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles.

Ex-drummer of Alanis Morissette

Taylor Hawkins was the Foo Fighters’ drummer for twenty-five of the band’s twenty-eight years, succeeding original drummer William Goldsmith in 1997. Born Oliver Taylor Hawkins in Fort Worth, Texas in 1972, he grew up in Laguna Beach, California. He played in the small Southern California band, Sylvia, before landing his first major gig as the drummer for Canadian singer Sass Jordan.

He then spent the mid-1990s as a touring drummer for Alanis Morissette, another Canadian singer, before Dave Grohl asked him to join the Foo Fighters, due to his very dynamic and powerful style. This is the second time Grohl has seen the death of a close band member, with that of 1990s grunge icon Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, in 1994.

It was after Cobain’s death that then-drummer Dave Grohl founded the Foo Fighters, taking on the role of guitarist and vocalist. It is now one of the most popular rock bands in the world and one of the most played on American radio.
