In Afghanistan, the Taliban ban BBC television news in the three main languages

The Taliban have banned the broadcasting of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) television news in the three main Afghan languages, British radio and television reported on Sunday (March 27th). “BBC TV news bulletins in Pashto, Persian and Uzbek have been taken off the air in Afghanistan, after the Taliban ordered our TV partners to take international broadcasters off their air”BBC World Service language manager Tarik Kafala said in a statement.

The British channel called on the Taliban to immediately reverse what it described as a withdrawal of international broadcasters from the Afghan airwaves which is preventing the broadcast of its television bulletins in Afghanistan. “We ask the Taliban (…) to allow our television partners to immediately broadcast BBC news bulletins on their airwaves”continued Mr. Kafala, denouncing a “worrying development at this time of uncertainty and turbulence for the Afghan people”.

Six million viewers

More than six million Afghans watch BBC programs every week, Kafala said: “It is crucial that they are not deprived of it in the future. »

“Another spine-chilling development. The Taliban are ordering the Afghan media to suspend all transmission of international media broadcasts. Another repressive measure against the Afghan people”denounced on Twitter United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

The decision comes as Islamist fundamentalists, in power in Afghanistan since August 2021 and the withdrawal of US troops, reversed their decision on Wednesday to allow girls to study in secondary school, just hours after the reopening, which had been announced a long time ago.

In seven months of governance, the Islamists have swept away twenty years of freedom won by women and imposed a multitude of restrictions on them.
