On YouTube and Twitch, Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Eric Zemmour speak more than the others

Nineteen million French people connect to YouTube every day, according to Médiamétrie. And on the online video platform, professional programs devoted to the presidential election are thriving. However, contrary to the traditional audio-visual one, the speaking time of the candidates is not counted there. Which candidates express themselves the most? Which ones are most seen and heard there?

Thanks to a semi-automated tool called “Timer”, The world counts, since the 1er January, the speaking time and audience of presidential candidates on the two main video platforms that host them: YouTube and Twitch. As of March 28, 2022, 279 videos, one hundred and sixty-one hours of programming for eighty-nine hours of cumulative speaking time and some 50 million views have been recorded. No equity in airtime on the Internet

Since the start of the year, Jean-Luc Mélenchon (4:19 p.m.), Eric Zemmour (12:47 p.m.) and Valérie Pécresse (10:29 a.m.) have all three accounted for more than half (51%) of overall speaking time recorded by the twelve qualified candidates for the first round. On March 28, they are ahead of Anne Hidalgo (7:11 a.m., or 10%), Yannick Jadot (6:26 a.m., 9%), Marine Le Pen (5:40 a.m., 8%) and Emmanuel Macron (5:14 a.m., 7% ); Philippe Poutou, Nathalie Arthaud, Fabien Roussel, Jean Lassalle and Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, between them, accumulate 13% of speaking time.

This distribution does not respect the principle of equality of speaking time between the candidates, which is mandatory on television and radio, between the 1er January and March 28, 2022. Set up to guarantee political pluralism in the media, it does not concern media broadcast online. Since March 28 and until the second round of the presidential election, it is the rule of strict equality between the candidates, whatever the weight of their party or their position in the polls, which prevails.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon (9 million views, 19%) and Eric Zemmour (7.5 million views, 15%) alone capture a third (33%) of the audience generated by the campaigns of the twelve candidates. , since 1er January. They are ahead of Anne Hidalgo (5.4 million views, 11%), Valérie Pécresse (5.4 million views, 11%) Marine Le Pen (4.9 million views, 10%), Yannick Jadot (3.5 million views, 7%) and Emmanuel Macron (3.4 million views, 7%).

A significant part of the audience generated by Emmanuel Macron is however linked to interventions which fall under his function as head of state, and not as a candidate. If we add these interventions to the count, the President of the Republic doubles his visibility, with nearly nine million views.

Eight of the twelve candidates in the running have, for the moment, recorded a significant part of their audience thanks to one program in particular: “The Interview face hidden”, by Hugo Decrypte, on YouTube, each episode of which records an average of 875,000 views. Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour achieve the greatest success: 1.4 million views, compared to just over 350,000 for Anne Hidalgo or Nicolas Dupont-Aignan.

The “Campaign HQ” program presented by the youtuber Guillaume Pley also joins the countdown of the Timer. The host from the world of entertainment announced that he would meet several candidates, without however specifying which ones. self-proclaimed “benevolent”, the program undertakes in particular to paint the portrait of the human beings behind the candidates. The first episode, lasting more than an hour, was devoted to Eric Zemmour and involved the candidate’s son for the first time. Released on March 23, it has already achieved nearly a million views.
