Emmanuel Macron tries to green his software

Emmanuel Macron in Fouras (Charente-Maritime), March 31, 2022.

Finally a country atmosphere. Three days after his trip to Dijon, during which he had made his first crowds as a candidate, Emmanuel Macron again went to meet residents and traders, Thursday March 31, during a trip to Fouras (Charente Maritime). In this town populated mainly by retirees, led by a Les Républicains (LR) mayor, the candidate president received a rather warm welcome, with encouragement in spades – “You are the best, unquestionably”, ” Good luck ! » – and the inevitable requests for souvenir photos.

But not only. Medical deserts, housing problems, end of life but also retirement at 65… Ten days before the first round of the presidential election, on April 10, Mr. Macron was also faced with protests and cries of anger, in any kind. Asked several times about the McKinsey affair, which embarrasses the executive, he replied, annoyed, to a woman: “The campaign must be about purchasing power, how we solve security problems, how we get out of war. Don’t put it on a fake topic! » Before screams arise. “Political betrayal, climate inaction! »yells a group of young people, reminding everyone of the purpose of the presidential visit.

Accused by the candidate of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV), Yannick Jadot, of not having ” nothing done “ to save the planet during his five-year term, Mr. Macron came to defend his ecological record and detail the measures he intends to implement in this area in the event of re-election. He is accused of having pursued a policy of “small steps”, lacking in ambition? He prefers to see the glass half full and highlight his achievements, such as the abandonment of Notre-Dame-des-Landes airport or the EuropaCity commercial area, north of Paris; the doubling of organic agricultural land; the creation of 13,000 kilometers of cycle paths or the reopening of 17,000 kilometers of train lines.

“We have doubled the rate of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the past five years,” he welcomed, during a speech of about thirty minutes, standing, in the middle of the market square of this town, where the State is investing to clean up an old landfill. Measures considered largely insufficient by environmental defense associations, with regard to the “climate emergency”.

Conversion premium

But Mr. Macron does not intend to embark on a radical project, aiming rather for continuity. Insulation work has been carried out in 800,000 homes; its objective is to continue this effort at a rate of 700,000 per year. After the conversion bonus, which has enabled a million people to swap their old car for a less polluting vehicle, he proposes the establishment of a mechanism for renting electric cars at less than 100 euros per month. “Decarbonize” energy consumption passes, according to him, by the increase in the production of the “renewable”, with in particular the construction of fifty offshore wind farms by 2050 and, above all, the creation of six new nuclear reactors. A choice contested by Greenpeace, which announced the filing of an appeal on Thursday “for excess of power” to the Council of State.
