A Marvel opens this cinematic week under the auspices of Tales of chance and other fantasiessigned in a Rohmerian spirit by the recipient of the Oscar for best foreign film for Drive My Car, Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi. For his part, the Spaniard Paco Plaza liquefies in horror with his Abuela, which makes a place of choice for the third age and a spell for the universal mythology of the grandmother. Horror also, but comic this one, in the arnacho-jokers Kervern and Delépine who repaint with At the same time political campaign with strong glue. A nervous little thriller from the Lisbon slums, at the same time as a story of training in a hostile environment, finally calls for attention with O Fim do Mundo from the Portuguese Basil da Cunha.
“Tales of chance and other fantasies”: three rounds of bonneteau on the table of desire
New standard of Far Eastern auteur cinema, the Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi made a dazzling international breakthrough, which led him, after the revelation of Senses in 2015, directly in the holy of holies of the Cannes competition with Asako I & II (2018) then Drive My Car (2021), title which has just received the Oscar for best foreign film.
Tales of chance and other fantasies, made during the break due to Covid-19 from the filming of Drive My Carselected at the 2021 Berlin Film Festival, is only being released today in France and confirms the director’s affinity with Eric Rohmer.
Three chaptered stories are proposed to us, in which the point of view, the dramatic initiative and the presence of women are preeminent. The formal austerity (two people talking to each other in a living room, an office, a car, etc.) contrasts sharply with the versatility of the feelings exposed there, the visible change in moods, the opacity of motivations. The illusion of control over one’s life and one’s desires is incessantly belied by the twists and turns of chance, as by the schemes of others blindly launched to meet ours. Jacques Mandelbaum

“Abuela”: Paco Plaza, virtuoso of terror effects
The extraordinary of vampirism and the ordinary of old age form, in Abuela, a singular and disturbing mixture. Susana, a young Spanish top model, is called back from Paris, where she hopes to start an international career. She learns that her grandmother, Pilar, suffered a stroke, which left her paralyzed. Condemned to take care of it and to put in place the conditions for her future, Susana seems resigned to cohabitation with the impotent old woman.
