Gas explosion in a restaurant on La Rambla Nova with several injuries
A loud roar has shaken this Sunday afternoon in a good part of the northern area of the Rambla Nova. A gas explosion, confirmed by Bombers (the causes are yet to be known), inside the Japanese restaurant Koyo (located at number 26) has caused the breaking of glass in the shop window of the premises, the fall of the false ceiling and a balance of seven injured, five of a mild nature and two less serious (SEM speaks of six affected, the City Council of seven). All of them have been referred to the city hospitals: Santa Tecla and Joan XXIII with SEM ambulances. The people affected by the explosion, two are pedestrians and five are workers. The place was closed this Sunday at that time of the afternoon.
Calls to the 112 emergency telephone number have begun to come in at 3:57 p.m. and the Bombers have activated a total of 7 crews, the Guàrdia Urbana de Tarragona several patrols, Mossos also several support units and the SEM has also taken half a dozen ambulances to respond to possible injured people.
The causes of the gas explosion at this time are uncertain and the report that Mossos will prepare will take a few days to know the main hypothesis of what happened.
But yes, the shock wave of this explosion has swept away glass and the false ceiling of some of the rooms. The origin of the explosion has been the kitchen and part of this wave has also damaged a place on Calle Armanyà, with which this building on Rambla Nova is on the corner.
With the injured treated and transferred, the rooms of the Japanese food place have been reviewed. As the minutes of the explosion have passed, it has been confirmed that the building that houses the restaurant would not have suffered structural damage. First Bombers and then the municipal architect of the city have visited the premises and the building, guaranteeing its structure.
The mayor of Tarragona, Pau Ricomà, has approached the Rambla Nova to find out first-hand what has happened this Sunday afternoon. He has done it accompanied by the Minister of Citizen Security, Cristina Guzmán. Later Ricomà explained that the explosion took place when the restaurant was closed, but that it affected "two people who were passing by on the sidewalk in front" and the others who were inside (the cooks).
Bombers have reviewed the state of the floors of the upper floors of the restaurant, which has been filled with debris from the collapse of the false ceiling and broken windows.
Ricomà and Bombers have pointed out that "almost certainly" it has been motivated by a gas leak that has ended up creating this explosion in the premises. The area has been sealed off in order to remove the debris generated by this explosion, most likely caused by a gas leak.
